TECH TIP FROM TPAH
Did you know that oral disease is the most frequently diagnosed heath problem for pets? An outstanding 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats show signs or oral disease by age 3, according to the American Veterinary Dental Society (AVDS).
The good news is that pet owners can reduce the risk of oral disease by practicing a regular dental care regimen at home, which may include brushing your pet’s teeth. Brushing your pet’s teeth is not as difficult as it sounds if you follow a few simple steps.
Step One-Take your pet to the veterinarian for a dental exam. Do not wait for his annual checkup if you suspect a problem.
Step Two-Buy a pet dental kit including toothpaste (made for dogs and cats) and a pet toothbrush. Special pet toothbrushes are available from your veterinarian or specialty pet stores.
Step Three-Introduce a brushing program to your pet gradually. Avoid over restraining your pet and keep brushing sessions short and positive. Praise and reassure the pet throughout the process. Practicing a regular dental care regimen at home can make a big difference in the health of your pet.
